Introduction
The Department of Geology was opened in 1951 and offering a geology course. In 1979 the Department was elevated to the status of Institute. The Institute of Geology has a fully automated, air-conditioned spacious library. It is the biggest departmental library provides efficient services to fulfill the information needs of its users. It has an excellent collection of 10961 titles comprising text books, reference books, general books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, printed and online journals, reports, theses, CDs. It also has selected digital collection. A variety of services are provided in the library such as: borrowing, online information retrieval, reference, referral, students' guidance and counseling, information literacy, access to online databases and digital resources. Qualified and experienced professional staff is committed to deliver the best.
Library Collection
Institute library has acquired and developed variety of resources to support the teaching and research programs offered at Institute of Geology Punjab University Lahore. They are well organized and easy accessible, arranged into various sections according to the specific nature of material and the requirements of the users .The objective is to facilitate users, requirements and demands of curriculum and provide access to the information that can be utilized in all spheres of the academic as well as the professional lives. - GENERAL COLLECTION
The main collection comprised high quality selected old and new books. This collection is organized according to Dewy Decimal Classification scheme addition to supporting course requirements and research needs; the general collection supplements the wide variety of patrons’ interest. The collection holds approximately 10961 general books and circulating titles in printed and electronic both formats
- PERIODICAL COLLECTION
Library has its departmental publication or journal in print till 2010.It holds 400 reports as well. The current issues are displayed on special racks back volumes of same are bound and shelved separately
- DONATED PERSONAL COLLECTION
Scholars, writers and books lovers always kept and maintain personal libraries at their residence. However the preservation of those books on scientific lines and their free access to general masses has never been manageable for them .These limitation has led some of them to donate their personal collections to public or institutional libraries at some point in their life. The complete and latest information on Theses /Dissertations of B.Sc./M.Sc./M.Phil. /Ph.D. is available in the library.

Library Services & Facilities
The Library services include lending, reference, current awareness service, SDI service, on-line information retrieval, inter library loan, document delivery.
The Reference/Help Desk is located at very visible and convenient location in the library and is staffed during scheduled library hours to provide patrons with in-depth and referral assistance. Lending/borrowing Services
Library materials are borrowed and returned at the circulation desk that is located near the main entrance.
Reservations of Books
You may reserve any book that has been borrowed by another patron/member. Reserved items will be held at circulation desk.
Document Delivery Services
Library has arrangements with leading Document Delivery Service providers. Any article not available in the library can be requested through this service.
Recommend/suggest a purchase
Library welcomes faculty, staff and students to recommend any material, which can add value to our library collection. The requests will be reviewed and purchase would be made subject to approval and availability of funds.
Suggestion of Books
Faculty may suggest any book that has not been available in library.
Current Awareness Services
The Institute of Geology Library supplied its members in each month photocopies of content pages of books and other materials converting vide range of subject areas of geology.
Information Insuring
Any information required by you will be provided with the help of an efficient and reliable reference desk or E-mail at librarian.geo@pu.edu.pk.
Readers Advisory
Service to facilitate the library users and guide them to their required library material library staff is deputed for reader’s advisory service.
Photocopy
Service for photocopy of library materials is available to members outside the library at campus bookshop.
Library Clearance
Any library member who is leaving / transfer from the Institute /university will have to clear his status from the library. In this regard one has to collect Library Clearance Certificate from the library.
Wi-Fi Facility
Free Wi-Fi is available in the Institute of Geology library to enjoy the World Wide Web facilities, Online Journals and other electronic databases with in campus.

- Timing for Circulation Section will be from 08:00AM to 4:00 PM
- Library will remain closed on Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays and for two weeks of “Annual Stock Taking”.

Library Membership Form is available in Library. To enjoy the facilities offered by Institute of Geology Library, the student/faculty/staff should submit library registration form (duty filled) the students are advised to keep their Library Cards with them while using the library.
Library Rules
Library patrons/participants are expected to observe the following rules while using the library facilities. Any violation may incur disciplinary action.

- Take care of your belongings as library disclaims any responsibility for loss or damage.
- Keep your cell phones on silent mode/switch off within library premises.
- To make the library environment more conducive for reading and research, gossiping, cell phone calls, sleeping, eating, drinking, smoking, chatting, and disturbing the order of library furniture is strictly prohibited.
- Submit library material(s) for inspection, if requested.
- Underlining, marking, folding and tearing pages of library materials is prohibited.
- Keep the library materials on shelves after consulting/reading.
- Only registered users can avail the facilities of the library.
- Every student should have his Library ID Card along with him whenever he visits the library. And will show the card to the library staff on demand.
- Any book or object should be shown for inspection, if so requested by library staff.
- Do not write, deface underline or mark any book. Library Books are carefully examined on return and the borrower will be held responsible for the damage.
- Library Books should be left on the reading tables, library staff will reshelf them.
- Books are liable to be recalled before the date, if required for some special purposes.
- The librarian is authorized to withdraw library facilities from any member who is found misusing the library material or facilities.
- Member is advised to inspect the books or other material at the time of issue they must dried the attention of the staff at the circulation desk.
