The Institute of Geology at University of the Punjab is the oldest seat of learning Geology in Pakistan. The institute was established to provide opportunities for study and research in disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields of geology. The Institute has an impressive 70 years history of education, research and exploration in the field of geology. In 1951, Department of Mineralogy was established and successively elevated to the Institute in 1979. Since then, the Institute is committed to quality education and research in pure and applied fields of geosciences. The major strength of the Institute is in the fields of Petroleum & Structural Geology, Sedimentology, Paleontology, Stratigraphy, Engineering Geology, Mineralogy & Petrology, Industrial Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Geophysics. The Institute extends excellent learning opportunities for its students by giving more emphases to the field work in plain as well as mountainous terranes coupled with extensive class room based knowledge. Its faculty has tremendous potential in research and their work particularly on NW Himalayan Geology is globally acknowledged and cited, as pioneers. They are continuously playing vital role in the socio-economic development of the country. It is an honor for the Institute that its alumni are serving nationally and internationally in academia, government and industry.
